PAC Recognized for Environmental Efforts

Congratulations to PAC’s Go Green! ¡Viva Verde! Committee for their work in addressing environmental issues on campus!

Here is a LINK to San Antonio Express-News reporter Melissa Ludwig’s blog on PAC’s recognition by the National Wildlife Federation, followed by the actual news release below by NWF.

Texas schools recognized in Campus Environment 2008

National Wildlife Federation Reviews Sustainability in Higher Education

RESTON, VA (August, 21, 2008) - Fourteen Texas colleges and universities were recognized in the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Environment 2008 Report Card, a comprehensive look at nationwide trends in sustainability among America's institutions of higher learning.

"The 2008 report finds that campus leaders across the country value sustainability. They speak about it, plan for it, hire staff to support it, and the campuses they lead are steadily becoming greener models for the wider society," said Julian Keniry, NWF's senior director of campus and community leadership. "These schools in Texas are showing that you don't have to sacrifice your other goals to achieve broad-based sustainability."

The Campus Environment 2008 Report Card is the nation's largest study to date gauging trends and new developments in campus sustainability. Over 1000 colleges and universities responded, 27% of campuses nationwide. The survey was sent to presidents, administrators, and facilities and was conducted in partnership with Princeton Survey Research Associates International managers. It was the first study of its kind when originally conducted in 2001.

More than 240 individual schools nationwide were recognized for their sustainable initiatives.

The study reveals nationwide trends including:

The most prevalent environmental initiative is water conservation, versus recycling in 2001;
Conserving energy is 2008's most popular performance goal, versus the 2001 goal of upping environmental performance in new buildings;

The biggest green opportunity colleges are missing is adequate education about sustainability for their students;

Funding was cited as the biggest obstacle to expanding environmental and sustainability programming, versus the "other priorities" cited in 2001.

American colleges show stronger environmental leadership than they did in 2001 and efforts to green U.S. campuses shine most brightly in day-to-day operations. For example, since 2001, the number of campuses using clean renewable energy has grown significantly, and a new movement to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases has taken hold. However, little progress has been made in reducing the congestion, pollution and other environmental impacts associated with campus commuting.

Perhaps the most surprising result shows that academics still lag behind the operations vision of the campus-even more so than when this survey was first conducted in 2001. Sustainability-related education offerings and recruitment programs have declined, as have faculty doing environmental and sustainability research. Just over half of colleges and universities now offer either an undergraduate major or minor in environmental and sustainability studies, down from two-thirds in 2001.

"This Report Card tells us there is a widening gap between where higher education actually is on teaching sustainability versus where it should be," said Kevin Coyle, vice president of education for National Wildlife Federation. "Given the environmental challenges and opportunities this generation will face, I find this cause for deep concern and am committed to working with our partners to address this on both state and federal levels."

Campus Environment 2008 Report Card recognized the following Texas institutions for their sustainability programs:

--Baylor University, Waco: Plans to Do More with Recycling, Solid Waste & Materials, Plans to do More with Green Landscaping & Grounds
--Cedar Valley College, Lancaster: Interdisciplinary Degrees * Plans to do More with Green Landscaping & Grounds
--Concordia University, Austin: More than 80% of Energy from Off-Campus Renewables
--Eastfield College, Mesquite: Plans to Do More with Goal-Setting
--Grayson County College, Denison: Students Taking a Course on Ecology or Sustainability
--Huston-Tillotson University, Austin: Recycling More than 80% of Municipal Waste
--North Lake College, Irving: Environmental & Sustainability Personnel, Orientations * Supporting & Evaluating Faculty
--Palo Alto College, San Antonio: Plans to Do More with Goal-Setting
--Texas A & M University, Commerce: More than 80% of Energy from Off-Campus Renewables --Texas A & M University, Galveston: Environmental & Sustainability Personnel, Orientations
--University of Dallas, Irving: Plans to do More with Green Landscaping & Grounds
--University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston: Plans to Do More with Transportation Programs * Plans to Do More with Recycling, Solid Waste & Materials
--University of Texas, Arlington: Plans to Do More with Efficiency, Conservation & Renewables * Plans to Do More with Recycling, Solid Waste & Materials
--University of Texas, El Paso, El Paso: Plans to Do More with Transportation Programs

Since it was launched in 1989, the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program has worked with the college campus community (students, faculty, administrators and staff) to promote sustainability and ecological stewardship on campuses and beyond. The full Campus Report Card, including a list of schools participating in the survey and a list of schools with exemplary programs can be found at www.campusecology.org.

The National Wildlife Federation is the nation's largest conservation organization inspiring Americans to protect wildlife for our children's future.

PAC Convocation

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS SENT ON BEHALF OF THE PAC PRESIDENT:

Dear Palo Alto College Administrators, Faculty and Staff,

Convocation day will be Monday, August 18. The ACCD Instructional Innovation Council has planned a district-wide convocation. This ACCD Faculty Convocation is scheduled for Monday, August 18, at San Antonio College’s McAllister Fine Arts Center beginning at 9:00 a.m. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. I will be joining you at this morning’s event. Palo Alto College will have its traditional Convocation Luncheon on Monday, August 18, in the PAC Student Center beginning at 11:30 a.m. As always we will continue to have required Faculty Development on Tuesday, August 19. A schedule for Convocation week is enclosed.

Our last academic year was most productive for Palo Alto College. Our Commencement Ceremony had a greater number of students than last year with a total of 302 walking in graduation. Rick Noriega, Texas representative from Houston, delivered the Keynote Address at the Municipal Auditorium on May 8th He challenged our students and faculty to become leaders in the community and to be very thoughtful about our important role in the community. This year’s commencement was held at the Municipal Auditorium, the first time in such a large venue. At commencement practice, I worried that we would be dwarfed by this new venue, but that evening it was amazing to see that auditorium full!

Palo Alto College is well underway in the ACC Capital Improvement Program (CIP). We have recently completed the construction of the Veterinary Technology building and the renovation of the Fine Arts building. The Vet Tech building has brought new surgical rooms, clinical pathology lab, parasitology lab, dog kennel and outside exercise area, 3 classrooms, pharmacy and x-ray room. This new facility has already enabled the Vet Tech program to increase enrollment to 50 students. The Fine Arts building renovation has also brought a new art gallery and kiln rooms to name a few.

Renovations

We are in the process of planning for the renovation of ten buildings, approximately 81,276 sq. ft. on campus. The renovation of the Palomino and Counseling Centers is expected to begin in August. The Business, Social Sciences, Applied Science, Math and Science, Gymnasium, Ozuna, Faculty Offices and Education Labs buildings will also be renovated over the next few years.

New Construction

We are in the process of constructing two additional buildings to include the Convocation, and Science and Workforce Building. The Convocation building will provide additional classroom space, a theater/auditorium with a seating capacity for over 450 students, a recital hall, dance studio, and recording studio. The Science and Workforce building will add over 20 additional classrooms and computer labs. The building will also host specialized workforce programs such as EMT, Hazwoper and Allied Health. These new buildings will bring an additional 95,423 sq. feet of classroom, labs and office space to the college.

This year’s faculty development day will focus on learning communities as well as security and emergency preparedness on campus. I look forward to a wonderful year with all of you.

Used Car for Sale

This is the first "Used Car Sale" I have posted on the site, but how could I resist when one of San Antonio's premiere poet, Naomi Shihab Nye, can vouch for the car! Here's her note:

"I can also vouch for the car! It is really trusty and even has one of those cool Subaru ice chests built into the back floor of it... please feel free to forward this message, he is anxious to sell as he is leaving to Vancouver in less than 2 weeks...naomi"

Here's a description of the car:

2000 Subaru Forester L - One owner, clean, runs great! - $5000 (Downtown SA)

For sale is a 2000 Subaru Forester L purchased new from the dealer (one owner). 5-speed manual transmission. This car looks really nice. I have performed regular maintenance at the proper intervals, and have installed new tires twice. The interior is very clean, and shows wear consistent with an 8 year old car. The engine runs great, and the vehicle has never broken down while driving. Car's exterior has no dents or major blemishes, but does have various minor nicks and scratches accumulated over time. Mileage is 118500.

The timing belt and water pump have just been replaced (routine required maintenance).

The A/C blows cold, the heater works well, all power windows/locks/mirrors work, front and rear wipers/defog all work great. The factory CD player stopped reading discs, so I replaced it with an aftermarket Sony CD player in 2007. The vehicle is equipped with a keyless entry system (one remote).

Some things you should be aware of: - New clutch installed within first two years due to tightness issues. This issue was covered under warranty and has never resurfaced. - Faulty "Check Engine" light – Many early 2000s Foresters have this issue, and it has to do with the oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor was replaced, and the light continued to stay on while driving. Subaru dealer tells us not to worry about it, and turned off the light for us. - Side panels have been dented on two occasions. Both instances were minor and were repaired by body shops. No major body damage, engine damage, or frame damage has ever been inflicted. - Vehicle color is dark green (forest green). Type "L" trim.

I live in downtown San Antonio, Texas. I will be available on weekends if you wish to come look at the car or test-drive it.

If you are interested, please call my cell at (210) 777-7154 and we will set up an appointment.

Thanks
–Madison Nye

The Conjunto Music Program is the only one of its kind at the college and university level in the nation. Under the direction of Juan Tejeda, the program was established in 2002 and offers a wide range of services such as classes in Private accordion and Bajo Sexo, the Conjunto Notation and Recording Project, the development of a Tejano/Conjunto resource library, and an Artists-in-Residency Program. Acclaimed Conjunto musicians Eva Ybarra and Jesus “Chucho” Perales are scheduled to join Tejeda in teaching these courses at PAC.
