Mujeres: The Stories of Women

Janie Alonso has just forwarded me the link to a beautiful documentary on the works of Las Mujeres, a women's writer's group under the auspices of the Center for Women at Our Lady of the Lake University.

The documentary is on YouTube and is about 10 minutes in length. It is powerful and inspiring. I am very proud to know many of the women featured in the clip and am grateful for their contributions to the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers (SLHW).

SPURS ANNOUNCE COLLEGE RUSH PROGRAM
College students to enjoy discounts on single game tickets this season

SAN ANTONIO, October 8, 2009 – The San Antonio Spurs today announced a new program for the 2009-10 season offering college students significant discounts on single-game tickets for all Spurs home games. The Spurs College Rush program, which premiers opening night October 28 vs. New Orleans, allows students to purchase a lower level ticket for $30 (face value $68-$275) or an H-E-B FanZone ticket for $5 (face value $10-$49).

“We are very excited to launch our Spurs College Rush program,” said Frank Miceli, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. “We believe this program offers a tremendous value to college students. For less than the price of a movie a college student can now attend a game at the AT&T Center and experience the excitement of Spurs basketball.”

Tickets through the Spurs College Rush program will be available for all Spurs home games that are not sold out prior to 10 a.m. on game day. At 10 a.m. the Spurs will use a variety of communication tools to announce ticket availability for that night’s game including, spurs.com, keyword COLLEGE, where students can be linked to the College Rush Facebook page or Spurs_College on Twitter. Students can also receive automatic ticket availability updates via text alerts each game day by texting college to 50927 (standard message rates apply).

Spurs College Rush tickets are available for purchase one hour prior to tip-off (6:30 p.m. for a 7:30 p.m. tip) until that game is sold out. One hour prior to tip-off students who present a valid college ID at the AT&T Center Box Office can purchase two tickets. If a student presents an ID after the game is sold out they can either purchase a $5 standing room only ticket or purchase a Spurs College Rush ticket for the next available home game.

For more information on the Spurs College Rush Program visit spurs.com, keyword COLLEGE.

Domain Name and Email Update

Beginning October 12, the Alamo Colleges will begin phasing out their old domain name and email addresses to complete the transition to a new domain name and email addresses, which have been available since August 1. The domain www.accd.edu will change to www.alamo.edu and student, staff and faculty email addresses will also change from @mail.accd.edu to @alamo.edu. In addition to making both designations shorter and easier to remember, the change also will be consistent with the name “Alamo Colleges.”

This gradual transition also will allow Alamo Colleges’ faculty, staff and students additional time to notify those they exchange email with of their new email address and to update any references to the domain name on web sites, forms and wherever else it may be used.

Phased Retirement Program

October 1, 2009

Dear Colleague:

I am writing to inform you of a new retirement option recently approved by the Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees called the Phased Retirement Program that is being made available to full-time employees who are eligible for retirement.

Eligibility – This voluntary program is available to faculty, staff and administrators who are participating in the TRS (Teachers Retirement System) or ORP (Optional Retirement Program) retirement plan and who are eligible to retire because they meet the requirements for normal age retirement (age of 65 plus five years of service), or the Rule of 80 (a combination of age and employment service years totaling 80).

Overview – The Phased Retirement Program provides an opportunity for qualified employees to move gradually into retirement while phasing out of full time employment. If you are qualified, this approach to retirement can provide an opportunity to make a smoother personal, professional and financial transition over an extended period of time, from full-time employment, to part-time employment and finally into retirement.

Employees who decide to participate in the program will have an opportunity to work up to 49 percent of full-time at their pre-retirement pay rate, and to work in their pre-retirement occupation and at their pre-retirement department or work location. Staff and administrators may work up to one year preceding their full retirement; faculty may work up to three years.
Of course, participants will need to observe the provisions of their respective ERP, TRS and/or ORP plans. Other requirements include enrolling in the program before your retirement date, declaring an intention to retire no later than April 30, 2010, remaining separated for one full calendar-month before returning to work, and retiring between October 1, 2009 and May 30, 2010.

The Employee Services staff is available to provide further information and help arrange post-retirement work assignments for employees who wish to participate. Interested employees and faculty can contact their respective benefits coordinators for further information:

- Jose Fernando Espinoza 485-0215 jespinoza30@alamo.edu (if your last name starts with A-Ga)

- Debra Brandon 485-0228 dbrandon2@alamo.edu (if your last names starts with Gb-O)

- Idalia Velazquez 485-0226 mvelazquez@alamo.edu (if your last name starts with P-Z)

For questions regarding specific retirement benefits, employees should contact their ERS, TRS or OPR retirement advisor.

A plan outline is available on the Employee Services web-site http://www.alamo.edu/district/es/ and a schedule of information sessions is being prepared for each campus.

Sincerely,
Linda Boyer-Owens
Associate Vice Chancellor of Employee Services
