NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program

The NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program is now being administered by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). It is expected that approximately 20 two-year undergraduate, and 5 three-year graduate scholarships will be awarded annually to students pursuing aeronautical engineering and related fields. Total allocated award amounts are up to $40,000 for undergraduates and up to $125,000 for graduates. These funds will go towards tuition and related costs, as well as to provide paid summer internship opportunities at NASA research center.

Competitive applicants interested in this amazing opportunity should begin completing application materials immediately. A completed application will consist of profile information, academic background (including transcripts), a resume, an essay for undergraduates, a proposal for graduates, letters of recommendations, and any test scores, such as SAT’s and GRE’s, when appropriate.

Completed applications will be collected electronically from February 22nd through March 17th, 2008. Dual Credit Enrollment Increase

PAC’s Spring 2008 dual credit student enrollment is currently showing an increase of 26 percent over last year. Three additional high schools have been added to the program: Roosevelt (Occupational Technology); Edgewood Fine Arts Academy (Fine Arts); and Madison (Agriculture). PAC has dual credit partnerships with 31 high schools in San Antonio and the surrounding area.

Free Computer Assistance

PAC’s Corporate & Community Education Division, in partnership with the Advanced Technology Center, is hosting its monthly “PC Clinic” for the Alamo Community Colleges' Extended Family, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. ACCD employees and students can receive free computer troubleshooting and technical support from students and instructors of Palo Alto College’s CompTIA A+ Computer Certification Training Program.

College Board Selects PAC President

PALO ALTO COLLEGE PRESIDENT
SELECTED TO THE COLLEGE BOARD’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dr. Ana M. “Cha” Guzmán, president of Palo Alto Collage, has been appointed by the College Board, a not-for-profit membership association whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity, to serve on its Board of Trustees. Among the College Board’s best-known programs are the SAT®, the PSAT/NMSQT®, and the Advanced Placement Program® (AP®).

Trustees are responsible for making legal and fiduciary decisions for the corporation; approving its mission, strategic goals and objectives; establishing policies related to membership, programs, and services; approving the annual budget; and advising the College Board president.

“I’m extremely honored to have been selected to serve as a College Board trustee,” Dr. Guzmán said. “I’m looking forward to working with College Board President Gaston Caperton on a variety of issues that will continue to ensure students nationally and internationally achieve success in higher education.”

According to its website, the College Board annually serves seven million students and their parents, 23,000 high schools, and 3,500 colleges through major programs and services in college admissions, guidance, assessment, financial aid, enrollment, and teaching and learning.

Palo Alto College, one of the Alamo Community Colleges, is a fully accredited community college located on the Southside, and awards associate degrees, short-term certificates and offers non-credit continuing education classes. Alternative Teacher Certification Program

The Alternative Teacher Certification Program at Palo Alto College is currently accepting applications for its Spring 2008 cohort, which begins on Jan. 14. A Bachelor’s degree is required to be considered. The teacher certification program offers teaching certificates in the following content areas: English Language Arts and Reading, grades 4-8 and grades 8-12; Science, grades 8-12; EC-4 Generalist, and Career and Technology Education (CATE), grades 6-12. Online classes are available in EC-4 to those who qualify.

Cost of the program is $5,000, and a payment plan is available as well as Sallie Mae and other Continuing Education Loans.
