Congratulations, Colton Thompson

The following is from Coach John Libby:

I have a student that has verbally committed to attend Sul Ross State University to continue his degree in Criminal Justice as well as continue his basketball career. We recently went on a campus visit and the coach and returning players are very excited about adding Colton to their team. Colton is a 2007 graduate of MacArthur H.S. and is a poster child of what our basketball program has become and will continue to be for local student athletes. Please help me in congratulating Colton on his hard work and perseverance in reaching his goal of playing NCAA basketball.

PAC Students March to A&M

News Release

Students “Team Up for Education” with a walk from Palo Alto to TAMUK-SA

SAN ANTONIO — On Thursday, March 26, 2009, college students from Palo Alto College (PAC) and students from surrounding school districts will participate in the First Annual “Team Up for Education March” to Texas A&M University-Kingsville System Center-San Antonio to learn about the University and the 24 undergraduate and 16 graduate programs TAMUK-SA has to offer.

Students will assemble at the Palo Alto Student Center, located at 1400 W. Villaret Blvd., at 11 a.m. and will depart at 11:30 a.m. to arrive at the TAMUK-SA Sombrilla (covered area), 1450 Gillette Blvd., by noon.

University Departments, including admissions, financial aid, recruiting, and student organizations will be on hand at the TAMUK-SA campus to welcome an expected 200 students and distribute information and answer questions on enrollment opportunities until 2 p.m. A computer station will also be set up for students to use APPLY TEXAS, a website that allows students to apply to the University on the spot.

Students from Palo Alto, and the other Alamo Community Colleges, are able to make a seamless transition into TAMUK-SA with the TEAMSA program which is designed to facilitate degree completion for AC students who have chosen to pursue a Bachelor's degree at the Texas A&M System campus in San Antonio.

State Senator Carlos Uresti commended the students on this march, saying, "Such enthusiasm shows their determination to get a college degree and demonstrates the great need for the A&M System campus planned for San Antonio. Young people who live on the South Side deserve a local institution of higher education that they can call their own."

Two $500 “Team Up March” Scholarships will be awarded. In addition, the first 100 students to sign up at PAC Transition Center receive a free gift.

Stephanie Elizondo Griest
Critically acclaimed Author,
"Mexican Enough: My Life Between the Borderlines"
Wednesday, March 25
11 a.m.
Student Center Annex
Free Refreshments will be provided!
This event is free and open to the public

From her website: Growing up in a half-white, half-brown town and family in South Texas, Stephanie Elizondo Griest struggled with her cultural identity. Upon turning thirty, she ventured to her mother's native Mexico to do a little root-searching and improve her "Tarzan Lite" Spanish... MEXICAN ENOUGH chronicles her journey from the narco-infested border town of Nuevo Laredo to the highlands of Chiapas. She investigates the murder of a prominent gay activist, sneaks into prison to meet with resistance fighters, rallies with rebels in Oaxaca, and interviews scores of migrant workers and the families they were forced to leave behind. Travel companions include a Polish thief, a Border Patrol agent, and a Dominatrix...MEXICAN ENOUGH illuminates how we cast off our identity in our youth, only to strive to find it again as adults--and the lessons to be learned along the way.

Emergency Notification System Test

TEST OF THE EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

Dear Faculty and Staff,

On Tuesday, March 24, Palo Alto College will conduct a test of the Emergency Notification System, which the Alamo Community Colleges is implementing to deliver urgent messages to students and employees during unforeseen events or emergencies, using phone calls, emails and/or text messages.

The Emergency Notification System enables us to schedule, send and track personalized voice messages to up to six phone numbers per person and immediately send messages four different ways:

• Voice messages to home phones, work phones, cell phones and email addresses
• Text messages to cell phones, PDA’s and other text-based devices
• Text messages to email accounts
• Messages to TTY/TDD receiving devices for the hearing impaired

Notifying students and employees immediately is crucial in time-sensitive situations, such as severe weather or college closure. It is essential for students and employees to keep their contact information updated with us. The more ways we have to contact you, the better we can deliver timely information and updates and keep everyone informed.

Contact information will only be used for Alamo Community Colleges’ notifications and will not be made available to any other service. This email is being sent to multiple lists; if you receive this email more than once, we apologize for any inconvenience.
