PACfest "Thank You" Brunch

Dr. Daniel Rodriguez and I would like to thank everyone at Palo Alto College, the Fiesta Commission, and District who helped make PACfest 2008 a highly successful official Fiesta San Antonio event! A special “Thank You” also goes out to PAC’s Student Services Fee Advisory Committee for authorizing the expenditure of funds that allowed us to have such high caliber entertainment—Pinata Protest; Kevin Goes 2 College; Nothing More; Max Rico; Clint Taft and the Buck Wild Band; and David Lee Garza Y Los Musicales. We also want to thank our student musical groups—Mariachi Palomino and Conjunto Palo Alto.

We especially want to thank the PACfest Committee, as well as everyone in Maintenance and Facilities Services for all of their work before, during and after PACfest. We also want to thank all the student volunteers who worked booths, and served as runners and “jacks-of-all-trades” all the way from 7 in the morning until almost 9 o’clock at night. Without everyone’s help, it never would have gotten done.

In appreciation, we would like to invite PACfest Committee Members, along with faculty, staff and student volunteers, to a “THANK YOU” Brunch Celebration being held tomorrow, Thursday, May 1 at 10 a.m. in the Student Center. Please bring (or wear!) your 2008 PACfest t-shirt, which will serve as your entry ticket to the brunch. Please help us pass the word to the student volunteers!

Dan and I would also like to thank our staff for their hard work and long hours, but most importantly, Nancy De La Torre, who oversaw every aspect of PACfest 2008. We owe her a huge debt of gratitude.

In the next few days, please take a moment to email Dan and I, and let us know what areas we need to improve on for next year, or give us your ideas for something new to try.

With Sincere Appreciation to Everyone,
Dr. Dan Rodriguez
Vincent Bosquez

Math/Science Scholarships

PALO ALTO COLLEGE/TAMU TEAM UP
TO OFFER MATH/SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

SAN ANTONIO— Palo Alto College (PAC) and the Texas A&M University College of Science are teaming up to make the dream of achieving a four-year math or science degree a reality for high school and college students by offering up to $10,000 per year in scholarship assistance for any unmet financial needs.

Backed by a five-year, $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, the two partners have established the Science Scholars Program which will provide scholarships for undergraduate students majoring in biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics who begin their studies at PAC, a two-year program, then transfer to Texas A&M to complete their four-year degrees.

San Antonio area high school students that have dual credit or participate in a Campus Connections/PAC Access project, and are in the top 10 percent of their class with a minimum Math SAT of 550 are eligible for the program. Students must also be financially eligible as well. Current PAC students with an overall 3.0 GPA and majoring in biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics will also be considered.

The deadline to apply for the scholarship is May 1. Additional information and a scholarship application can be found at www.science.tamu.edu/sciencescholars/.

Palo Alto College, one of the Alamo Community Colleges, is a fully accredited community college located on the Southside, and awards associate degrees, short-term certificates and offers non-credit continuing education classes. The campus is located at 1400 W. Villaret Blvd. at I-410 South and Texas Hwy. 16 or online at www.accd.edu/pac.

Cisneros "Follower" Needs Your Help!

The following message is from Marian Haddad, sent on behalf of Sandra Cisneros:

Hi folks,

This is for you and to tell your friends and family, as well.

Our San Antonio linda, Sandra Cisneros, had a dog follow her all the way from San Fernando Cathedral . . . therefore, she named him Fernando which she said, "Makes me think of the song by ABBA." Anyhow, this is the deal, she already has many dogs . . . and Fernando is a dog with a big bark, she said, but very sweet . . . she said he is a Shepherd Chow mix . . . the dog is neutered and Sandra has given him his first shot, and he is ready for a home. Let me know if you are interested or if anyone is interested so I can keep Sandra posted, so she can rest assurred.

National Poetry Month

HAPPY NATIONAL POETRY MONTH!
Star Love
By Vincent Bosquez

Two stars
Twinkling brightly for each other,
Never destined to meet.

Surrounded by other stars
Equally bright,
Beautiful and unique.

A billion stars
Shining in the galaxy
Yearning to be seen by all.

Except for our two stars
Twinkling brightly for each other
But never destined to meet.
