FREE MOVIE PASSES

I have 25 movie passes for the Monday, July 30th sneak preview of "El Cantante" starring Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. The movie will be shown at the Santikos Silverado Theater, 1505 West Loop 1604 North.

If you want posters of the movie, they are currently at the Student Center! Better hurry before all the students attending the registration bash get them!

El Cantante celebrates the life and music of the legendary Puerto Rican salsa singer Hector Lavoe, a pioneer of the sound and sensibility that redefined Latin music in the 1960s and 1970s. Spanning the 1960s to the 1980s, El Cantante charts Hector Lavoe's rapid rise to success and fame as an artist whose music combined Puerto Rican tradition with streetwise modernity and unabashed emotion with straightforward realism.

PAC, Hispanic Chamber Form Partnership

Palo Alto College and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SAHCC) have joined forces to establish an “Access to Technology” educational program for chamber members seeking to master the latest technological tools available in today’s marketplace.

Fifteen classes are offered in the passport program which covers beginning to advance courses such as “Basic PC Maintenance and Troubleshooting,” “QuickBooks for Accounting” and “Web Design and Development.” Each course is individually priced, includes materials and is held at locations throughout San Antonio. For classes of 10 or more students, training can be conducted on-site at the customer’s business location.

“We are very excited about this partnership and the opportunities that it will bring small business owners who otherwise might not be able to attend classes such as these to improve their business skills,” said A.J. Rodriguez, president and CEO of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “This would not have been possible without the gracious support of the AT&T Foundation, who contributed monetary resources needed to launch the program.”

According to PAC Information Technology Program Manager Tod Bruning, the courses were developed based on a technology training needs assessment conducted by the SAHCC for its membership. Course offerings are scheduled to begin Aug. 1, and SAHCC members will receive a 20 percent discount over regular catalog prices for the program.

Under terms of the partnership agreement, the Hispanic Chamber will provide Palo Alto College with $18,000 in scholarships during the life of the agreement, which expires in December 2008.

PAC Palominos serving the Community

On Friday, the 2007 Walk and Roll Corporate Challenge winner was announced, and while the energy-conscience Palominos of Palo Alto College did not win, I am proud of everyone who participated in this worthwhile event during the month of June to travel smarter for our environment.

Nineteen organizations encouraged over 9,000 employees to participate in the city-wide program, resulting in 550,000 smart miles being logged, which I'm told reduced one ton of pollution in June.

The next community-wide event PAC will be participating in is HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, Friday, July 20 at 7:45 a.m. at Algo Dulce Drive. Project Hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and

Laurie A. Guerrero

I received an email this morning from a former Palo Alto College student that I haven't met, but have heard so much about because in the Fall of 2005 she became the first PAC transfer student to go to Smith College on a full scholarship!

Her name is Laurie A. Guerrero and she is a good friend of author Nanette Campos, the July guest speaker for the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio's monthly meeting. Laurie currently makes her home in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she is an Ada Comstock Scholar and a Sophia Smith Scholar in Poetry at Smith College. However, Laurie is going to be making the visit to San Antonio in time to attend Nanette's presentation to us next Monday, July 9, at the Barnes and Noble (San Pedro Crossing) at 7:30 p.m.! The meeting is free and open to the public.

I am looking forward to speaking with Laurie, as she is an accomplished writer/poet/artist in her own right. Among her many accomplishments are having been published in the SA Express, Voices Along the River, Literary Mama, and The Texas Poetry Calendar 2007 & 2008 (forthcoming). She is a two-time winner of the Rosemary Thomas Poetry Prize, has been nominated for the Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship, and her chapbook manuscript was a finalist in a competition sponsored by Kulupi Press. The most recent issue of The Palo Alto Review features her artwork on the cover and her poetry.

She recently finished a full poetry manuscript as part of an independent curriculum at Smith, and is sending it to publishers (contests) this summer. While she is in San Antonio for the month of July, she will be leading a poetry workshop funded by Smith College, and supervised by Linda Pritchett, an instructor at UTSA.
