Administration Announces U.S. Accrediting Panel Appointments

Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the Department's appointments to the newly reconstituted National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI), which advises the secretary on issues related to accreditation and the eligibility and certification process for institutions of higher education.

Congress disbanded the Bush administration-appointed panel as part of last year's long-delayed measure renewing the Higher Education Act. The legislation overhauled the process by which panel members are appointed, shifting from a 15-member committee appointed solely by the Secretary of Education to an 18-member committee appointed equally by the Secretary, the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The Department's six appointees are Earl Lewis, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, Emory University, Atlanta, GA; Susan Phillips, provost and vice president for academic affairs, University at Albany, State University of New York; Jamienne Studley, president and CEO, Public Advocates Inc., San Francisco, CA; Aron Shimles, student, Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA; Frank Wu, professor, Howard University Law School, Washington, D.C.; and, Frederico Zargoza, vice chancellor of economic and workforce development, Alamo Colleges, San Antonio, TX.

The House and Senate are expected to complete their appointments in the coming weeks.
