If you have already applied, please allow 3 to 4 weeks for the federal student data to download into our web college system. APPLY TODAY if you have not done so, as all documents must be completed by the priority date.

GUARANTEED DATE FOR PROCESSING AND AWARDING: JULY 1, 2010

 Student who submit all the required documentation by July 1 are guaranteed to have their financial reviewed and awarded if eligible by the start of the Fall 2010 classes.

 Students who submit required documentation after July 1 must be prepared to either pay their own tuition or make arrangement with the college Bursar’s Office for the College Payment Plan.

Classes are filling quickly for PAC's Summer 2010 Career Discovery Camps for high school students!

Opening only remain in:

Landscape and Horticulture--If you're interested in growing plants, creating beautiful landscapes, being in a plant-related business, landscape design/landscape architecture, or improving the environment, then this camp is for you! Program highlights include hands-on application in our on-campus greenhouses, nurseries and ground facilities, and field trips to area nurseries and botanical gardens.

Business/Logistics Cluster--If you're interested in the movement of goods and services, the operations of a business, or just how things get to the store for you to buy them, here is the place to start. You will have the opportunity to learn from people who work in the business and logistics fields. You willl also get to play a computer simulation that allows you to learn first-hand how logistics works in our world.

Education Cluster--If you're interested in the teaching profession or assisting in the classroom, then this camp is for you. Each day creates activites letting you experience the unique insights to learning and exploring the skills you bring to the profession in today's world.

This is a grant funded course, so tuition is FREE! It is available to high school students between the ages of 15-18. The camps start on Monday, June 7 and last two weeks, and end June. 17. the camps will meet Monday thru Thursday from 8 a.m. to Noon.

The Alamo Area Council of Governments named Palo Alto College as a “2010 Air Quality Stewardship Award Champion,” recently. AACOG recognized PAC for the establishments of the Go Green , Viva Verde Committee, its aggressive recycling program and foresight of planting shade trees as energy-saving measures. Dr. Denise Barkis Richter accepted the award on behalf of the Committee and Palo Alto College at a ceremony held in Main Plaza.

Below is a link to the Banner ID Look up tool. Essentially, a user will populate his or her last name and the last 4 digits of the SSN, and the banner id will be returned. This will be a tremendous help to our students/faculty/staff needing their banner id information. And, if advertised properly, it should reduce the amount of calls to our respective helpdesks, requiring that information.

I am sharing it because you may want to coordinate the placement of the link on high profile locations on the college websites. I’ve also shared this with the respective IT directors.

We don’t want it on the ACES site, because it may potentially confuse the user about which ID to use (ACES or Banner).

PAC Student Signs With Hiwassee College

Drew Jefferson, a sophomore at Palo Alto College, has just signed his letter of intent to attend Hiwassee College in Madisonville, TN in the fall of 2010. After a recent campus visit and workout with the basketball team, Drew was offered a partial scholarship to attend and play basketball for the Hiwassee College Tigers.

Drew is a 2007 graduate of East Central High School and has played for the Palo Alto Palominos for the last two years. While studying Kinesiology at PAC, Drew has continued to work on his skills as a point guard and is proof that hard work does pay off. His GPA and his athleticism has earned him enough scholarship money to almost completely pay for his schooling next year.

When asked why he chose Hiwassee College, Drew replied, “Coach Jones stayed in constant contact with me throughout the year, and after my visit, he and the team we very welcoming. I knew I had found a place to continue my education and play ball.”

Drew is no stranger to dealing with adversity. Standing a whopping 5’5”, you would think he may have chosen another sport. “I have always had a passion for the game” said Drew. “I look at guys like Spud Webb and Nate Robinson and say to myself, if they can go pro at their size, I can at least play college ball.”

Drew described his time at PAC as a great humbling and learning experience. “When I first came to PAC, I thought I was ready for the big time, but I quickly realized that I had lots to learn before going on the university.”

“Academically, the teachers here were awesome. They showed me the importance of caring about my grades and that if I take ownership of them, I can make them as high as I want them to be.”

When asked about his time playing at PAC, Drew said, “Coach Libby helped me realize that although I wasn’t ready yet, if I believed and worked hard enough, anything was possible. He always said as long as I stayed mentally focused and remained positive, then the outcome could only be positive. He pushed be to be the best I could be and allowed me to blossom first as a student and then as an athlete.”

Drew has plans to complete his Bachelors’ Degree while at Hiwassee College and play basketball as long as he can. “One thing I learned at PAC was that my mind will last longer than my legs” said Drew. Once basketball is over and a degree in hand, Drew hopes to enter the world of coaching and share his passion and work ethic to some very lucky future student-athletes.

The San Antonio College Women’s Center is accepting applications for the 2010-2011 LULAC Parent/Child Scholarship Program. Please encourage qualified individuals to submit their application before the final deadline on June 1, 2010 for consideration.

The LULAC Parent/Child Scholarship Program, honored in 2007 with the prestigious STAR Award by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, seeks to ensure the educational success of two generations by providing support, assistance and incentives for parents to successfully complete their educational objectives.

Scholar parents receive $1,000 in scholarship monies to attend one of the Alamo Colleges to assist them with educational expenses. Those that complete their educational goal (certificate, associate degree or university transfer) guarantee a two year scholarship for their child to attend any Alamo College after their high school graduation.

Simply dine at Chili’s and bring the flier in this post, and Chili’s will donate 10 percent of your bill to SGA.

SGA plans to use the funds raised at this event to assist the Haiti’s Children Rescue Mission.

Graduation Festival

As the Spring semester winds down and students prepare for final exams, there’s a contingent of students that are looking forward to PAC’s 24th annual Commencement Ceremony being held at the Municipal Auditorium, Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m.

Making this event special is the possibility that this will be the largest group of students participating in the Commencement Ceremony. Last year’s record of 288 students looks like it will be easily toppled as more than 400 students have made a commitment to participate in this year’s Ceremony.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 28, PAC will host “Graduation Festival” in the Student Center Annex from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This festive event is designed to give graduating students a “one-stop” location for picking up their cap and gown, tickets to enter the Municipal Auditorium for family and friends, and a parking pass.

Graduation Festival will also include tables for representatives selling graduation rings and invitations, along with representatives from four-year universities providing information for students to continue their academic journey. The Center for Academic Transitions will make available PAC’s new Alumni Coordinator and Career Services staff.

The Office of Student Life will be providing salsa, meringue and cumbia music, along with refreshments consisting of pan dulce, donuts, cookies, kettle corn, coffee, juice, water and soft drinks. They have even worked out a deal with Maverick Cleaners (1952 SW Military Drive) to steam press graduation gowns for $1.99!

Texas Tornados cancel PACfest performance;
Augie Meyers to receive kidney transplant

David Lee Garza y Los Musicales to headline PACfest 2010

Augie Meyers, the heart and soul of the Texas Tornados, has received the message he has been longing to hear—a kidney has been found that will enable him to undergo the transplant operation he needs to improve his quality of life and stop the dialysis treatments he has been undergoing since last year.

According to David Lloyd, a TG2 Artists agent representing the Texas Tornados, Meyers received the news Sunday evening, and the operation has been scheduled for Wednesday, which has caused the Texas Tornados to cancel their performance at Palo Alto College’s PACfest 2010 event.

“While we’re disappointed that the Texas Tornados will not be performing at PACfest, we’re happy to know that Augie’s wait on the kidney donor list has come to an end and that he will soon be in good health,” said Dr. Daniel Rodriguez, a PACfest coordinator. “The college joins all his fans in wishing him a successful operation and we’re looking forward to Augie producing great music in the future.”

Filling the headline band spot on the PACfest musical roster will be David Lee Garza y Los Musicales.

Other bands performing on two musical stages are AUDIOMOUTH, Cactus Country, River City Kings, Goodnight Ether, Von Army, Soul Congress, the New Tattoos, and the Court Jesters.
PACfest will be held in the campus courtyard on Thursday, April 22. The event begins at 11 a.m., and ends at 9 p.m.

With the cancellation of the Texas Tornados, PACfest officials have decided not to collect a parking fee at the event.

Approximately 60 food and arts & crafts vendors will be participating in PACfest. Vendors include student and community groups, and have a cross-section of cultural, social and nutritional offerings. Other concurrent activities taking place throughout the day include children’s educational area, agricultural and nutritional areas, and a car show.

Miss Fiesta will join Dr. Ana M. “Cha” Guzmán, PAC President, in officially opening PACfest. Other Fiesta royalty will show up throughout the day to hand out medals and meet with the public.

Rosie Castro, Coordinator of the Center for Academic Transitions, will be honored at the “Honoring Mothers Celebration Luncheon” sponsored by the Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc., at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, May 5. According to the FVPS website, “Rosie Castro is not only a political activist who sought change for civil rights and women, she is also a tireless advocate for education for those minorities who are less likely to have access to a college degree.”

Marberry Awarded Firefighter of the Year Honors

Bennie Reed Marberry Jr., was one of three emergency responders recognized at the 20th District American Legion Law and Order Banquet at Alamo Post No. 2, April 10. The post gives the awards annually to recognize the San Antonio firefighter, police officer and paramedic of the year. Marberry, who began teaching exclusively for PAC’s EMS program in 2006, was recognized as the Firefighter of the Year.

Beginning with the Fall 2010 semester, Alamo Colleges will be using ACES (Alamo Colleges Education Services), our new portal system, for registration and all communication with students. Students will be using Self Service to register once they are admitted to the colleges and permitted to sign up for fall classes.

Fall registration begins June 14, 2010. Through a Time-Ticketing staggered start process, students will have a start date for registration based on their total number of hours earned. Once a group is allowed to begin registering, the process will remain open through the end of the registration process. Some groups of students may be registered by college advisors and will not be assigned a time ticket. Examples of these groups are Dual Credit Students, Gateway and Early College High School students, and Virtual College students.

The Time-Ticketing groups and start dates are shown below. Students can begin registering on date shown for their group (which is based on total hours completed - as reflected in the Banner system.

In April 2009, Alamo Colleges began the process of changing the domain name from ACCD.EDU to ALAMO.EDU. We successfully launched the new domain ( http://alamo.edu ) and email address (username@alamo.edu) in October 2009.

Since October 2009, we have been diligently working with college webmasters and IT professionals to ensure a smooth transition by supporting both ACCD.EDU and ALAMO.EDU. In order to do this, we applied for and received the maximum extension from EDUCAUSE – the governing body for .EDU domain names. The extension allowed us to maintain both domain names for 12 months from our initial registration of ALAMO.EDU with EDUCAUSE on April 12, 2009. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience in making this transition as smooth as possible.

As a result, on or shortly after Monday, April 12, 2010, EDUCAUSE will deactivate the ACCD.EDU domain from Alamo Colleges. Please ensure that all of your external links, bookmarks, and saved Alamo Colleges web pages utilize the ALAMO.EDU domain. In addition, please remind your contacts outside of Alamo Colleges to use the email address ending in ALAMO.EDU when sending email to you. This is extremely important because links will not work and mail will bounce back to senders outside of the colleges.

This is to let everyone know that Legal Services has updated its consultant and professional services form. It is now two different forms depending on the services that you are purchasing. The short form, with which most of your are familiar, is titled “Agreement for Professional and Consultant Services” and should be used for (and this is stated on the cover page of the form document) for short-term or event specific professional or consulting services rendered to Alamo Colleges. Examples of appropriate uses for this form are listed on the cover page of the document along with directions for processing the contract.

Additionally, we’ve created a new form, titled “Services Agreement” and should be used for professional or consulting services rendered to Alamo Colleges which are for a long term or of a substantive nature. Examples of appropriate uses for this form are listed on the cover page of the document along with directions for processing this contract.

These two forms, along with other forms, can be found on the Legal Services webpage cited above. I recommend that you always pull your forms from the webpage (in lieu of saving the form in your directory) in case we have minor updates that do not warrant a mass email notification. The forms on the webpage are the current versions and everyone is expected to use current versions of the form agreements. Often we receive agreements from the campuses in forms from 1, 2 or even 3 years ago. Please advise and remind anyone who is initiating contractual agreements that they should consult the Legal Services webpage for the current forms. If we do not have a form that fits your need, please contact our office and we will assist with drafting an agreement with you.

Please always keep in mind that forms are just that – a form. They will not address every situation perfectly. Any revisions need to be processed through our office. Additionally, when any form is in Word format, and “unlocked” you MUST use “track changes” when filling in blanks and making any proposed revisions.

We appreciate your cooperation. Please feel free to call us with any questions or concerns. Please forward this email to any faculty or staff that may have a need to use these forms.

PAC Women's Volleyball

Congratulations to the PAC women’s volleyball team for their recent participation in the AE NIRSA Volleyball Nationals. PAC was the only 2-year school in a field of 80 club sport teams from around the nation. After a rough start to the tournament losing their first three matches on day 1 to Texas A & M University, University of Dayton, and Augustana College respectively, PAC bounced back on day 2 to defeat Southern Illinois and University of North Texas before dropping a close match to Eastern Washington University. On day 3, PAC was eliminated in a close match by Duke University.

Faculty will assist as greeters at the door and do not need to attend the morning practice unless they desire to do so.

Free Viewing: Warrior Champions

A powerful documentary is coming to PAC's Performing Arts Theater, Wednesday, March 24 at 7 p.m.

"Warrior Champions: From Baghdad to Beijing" is an inspiring and emotional story of four severely wounded military personnel as they fight to turn injuries of war into Paralympic dreams.

The event is free and open to the public.

The movie, a Renaud Brothers film, follows four Iraq veterans who lost limbs or suffered paralysis while fighting for their country as they pursue their dream to compete in the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.

The screening is being held to complement the U.S. Paralympics Spring Swimming Nationals 2010 Spring Can-Am in the PAC Natatorium, March 25-27.

"Warrior Champions" follows Melissa Stockwell, the first female American Soldier in history to lose a limb in active combat; Carlos Leon (USMC); Kortney Clemons, a combat medic; and Scott Winkler, a U.S. Army veteran.

According to promotional materials promoting the film, "Warrior Champions" is not a sad tale of the tragedy of war, but rather an uplifting testament to the human spirit that challenges every notion of what it means to have a physical disability.

U.S. Paralympics Spring Swim Nationals

Natatorium site of U.S. Paralympics Spring Swim Nationals

Patricia Estrada, PAC's Natatorium Director, is busy these days ensuring the facility's Olympic size pool is ready for the U.S. Paralympics Spring Swimming Nationals 2010 Spring Can-Am, which will take place on campus, March 25-27.

This is the first major event the natatorium is hosting after being out of service for four months due to repairs. The natatorium is a joint use facility between the Alamo Colleges and the City of San Antonio.

San Antonio is the official host of the U.S. Paralympics and is coordinating events with Estrada to ensure a successful event.

According to San Antonio Sports, the Spring Swimming Nationals attract more than 400 participants from eight countries. The participants in these trials have visual or physical disabilities that they overcome to participate in this competition.

The U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, is dedicated to becoming the world leader in the Paralympics sports movement and promoting excellence in the lives of people with physical disabilities.

The event being held in the Natatorium is a Long Course competition, and the format of the meet will be preliminary and finals. Events that are not on the program of the Paralympics Games/World Championships will be designated as timed finals only to be conducted during preliminaries.

All preliminary events will be seeded by time (regardless of classification). Finals will be seeded by classification. A swimmer must place in the top eight (8) in their classification during preliminaries to advance to the final.

The Natatorium facilities will be available for training prior to the start of competition on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 23-24, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The actual event begins on Thursday, March 25 and ends Saturday, March 27. Preliminaries begin at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m., each day.

According to the U.S. Paralympics website, since its formation in 2001, U.S. Paralympics has been inspiring Americans to achieve their dreams. Through education, sports programs and partnerships with community organizations, medical facilities and government agencies, U.S. Paralympics is making a difference in the lives of thousands of physically disabled people every day.

He is a senior at UTSA where he is majoring in Business Management and Marketing, and the funds raised will be used to help him pay for an Honors College trip to study in Italy for three weeks this summer. Banner Outage over Spring Break

Alamo Colleges Colleagues:

Due to Banner Student System conversion efforts and software upgrade exercises, the Banner system (Finance, HR, Payroll and Student) will be unavailable beginning Tuesday, March 16, at noon and remain unavailable until Monday, March 22, 8:00 a.m. During this time, approximately 50 million records will be loaded into Banner (from SIS-Plus) and the Banner software will be upgraded to current levels to allow Financial Aid processing for 2010-2011 and to prepare for Fall registration beginning in April. We’ve projected this to be a five-day effort and thus the need to take the system on Tuesday. There is some risk that the outage may extend into Monday, but rigorous testing has shown this to be a minimal risk. This is by far the largest conversion effort of the Banner implementation project. It is our hope that scheduling this during the Spring Break holiday will minimize impact to the system user community. In any case, please plan your Banner needs accordingly.

As we approach Spring Break 2010, the Alamo Colleges Police Department would like to remind you of the following safety tips:

• Always stay in the proximity of at least one friend, and preferably two or three. Adhere strictly to this "buddy system" and do not leave with someone other than your buddies. Be sure to choose buddies you can trust.
• Do not leave with strangers, even if it seems like a good idea at the time. Always err on the side of caution and trust your instincts.
• Carry a cell phone with you in case of an emergency.
• Carry your identification and important medical information on your person in case of an emergency.
• Watch your drink very carefully! Be aware of "date rape" drugs that people may try to sneak into your drink. Never accept a drink from a stranger or let someone else hold your drink.
• Do not drink and drive.
• Be aware of all local laws and regulations involving alcohol, especially if you are travelling abroad.
• Make sure you know the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning.
• Drink lots of water! Don't rely on alcoholic or carbonated beverages to quench your thirst, as these drinks can actually make you more dehydrated. If the local drinking water is questionable, make sure you have an abundant supply of bottled water.
• Take as few valuables with your on your trip as possible,
• Always lock your hotel room door.
• If you are traveling abroad, keep your passport in a secure location at all times.

National Poison Prevention Week

Spring Break is the perfect time of year to begin spring cleaning! Included in that category is spring cleaning your house of poisons…This year’s National Poison Prevention Week is March 15 – 21, 2009 and the themes are “Children Act Fast, So Do Poisons,” and “Poisoning Spans a Lifetime.”

More than 2 million poisonings are reported each year to the 61 Poison Centers across the United States. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, approximately 90 percent of poisonings happen at home, and over 50 percent of poisoning exposures involve children under the age of 6. The majority of fatal poisonings occur among adults, especially older adults.

Since 1961, the third week in March has been designated National Poison Prevention Week, focusing national attention on the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them. Established by the U.S. Congress, National Poison Prevention Week is commissioned by the National Poison Prevention Week Council, an organization made up of public and private partners who are committed to reducing unintentional poisonings and promoting poison prevention.

Almost 90 percent of the public who call a local Poison Center get the help they need over the telephone without having to go to a doctor or the hospital.

How many diets have you tried? Are you still scratching your head about what's healthy to eat and what's not? Wonder what others are going through, or what they've already figured out about healthy, high-energy eating? Still struggling to be disciplined about what you eat? The members of the Food Forum do not have "the" answers, but together we will figure out some of these things for ourselves.

The PAC Food Forum is a discussion and study group on food, diet and nutrition, sponsored by the PAC Wellness Committee. It meets regularly on 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at noon in the Ozuna 206 conference room. Bring something for lunch, and thoughts to share about food, diet, cooking, and nutrition. Psychedelic: Optical and Visionary Art since the 1960s
March 13 through August 1, 2010

In 1956, Dr. Humphry Osmond coined the term 'psychedelic' to refer to hallucinatory experiences produced by the use of drugs during psychotherapeutic practices. Soon, Timothy Leary and the counter-culture’s hippie movement in America advocated "turning on, tuning in, and dropping out" as a means of intentionally seeking an intensified, sensory experience.

Additionally, the 1960s saw the advent of color television, fluorescent paints, and the Op Art movement’s experimentation with optical mixing to achieve dazzling color effects; all of which introduced a new visual language of extreme color and kaleidoscopic space into contemporary culture. By the end of the decade, one did not have to consume drugs to encounter a "trip"; the psychedelic aesthetic was experienced with light shows, lava lamps, posters and buttons, record album covers, fashion, and stage design for TV shows such as Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In, The Ed Sullivan Show, and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

Although psychedelic culture began to decline by the mid-1970s, one of its legacies is an aesthetic sensibility that has continued to evolve over the years and, more recently, has gained favor in growing numbers among contemporary artists.

San Antonio Museum of Art mounts an exhibit of psychedelic art from the Op Art of the early 1960s to the abstract and visionary works of today. Curator David Rubin takes the lead in what he calls the first-ever look at the development of a “psychedelic sensibility” in contemporary art of the last 40 years.

It should be stressed that this exhibition is about the influence of psychedelic culture on the art world — not necessarily the influence of drugs. Little of the content addresses drug issues; rather, in confronting a variety of issues, the artists exhibited employ a psychedelic aesthetic sensibility — extremes of color and light that did not exist to any extent in culture or in contemporary art prior to the birth of the psychedelic era.

A 140 page, fully illustrated, full-color. hardcover book, co-published with the MIT Press, accompanies Psychedelic: Optical and Visionary Art since the 1960s. In the lead essay, exhibition organizer David S. Rubin, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art, presents a cohesive narrative, tying together the relationships among the artists and analyzing their art in terms of content, culture, and history. Rubin has previously addressed a number of topics in this manner through catalogs for thematic exhibitions he has organized, among them Cruciformed: Images of the Cross since 1980, Old Glory: The American Flag in Contemporary Art, It’s Only Rock and Roll: Rock and Roll Currents in Contemporary Art, and Birdspace: A Post-Audubon Artists Aviary.

Psychedelic: Optical and Visionary Art since the 1960s features artists Albert Alvarez, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Jeremy Blake, Richie Budd, George Cisneros, James Cobb, Jack Goldstein, Alex Grey, Al Held, Mark Hogensen, Constance Lowe, Erik Parker, Lari Pittman, Ray Rapp, Deborah Remington, Susie Rosmarin, Alex Rubio, Sterling Ruby, Frank Stella, Philip Taaffe, Fred Tomaselli, Victor Vasarely, Michael Velliquette, and Robert Williams.

Alamo Colleges 2009 Recycling Totals

In 2009, the Alamo Colleges rescued 377,404 pounds of recyclables (paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass):

Northeast Lakeview College: 24,155 pounds
Palo Alto College: 53,599 pounds
Northwest Vista College: 65,805 pounds
St. Philip’s College: 83,925 pounds
San Antonio College: 149,920 pounds
TOTAL: 377,404 pounds*

(*These figures, provided by our recyclables contractor Greenstar, do not include the Sheridan Street, Pat Booker or Houston Street administrative locations. Those numbers are available, but I wanted to know what the five colleges had rescued.)

If you use the current Spring 2010 enrollment, which is similar to Fall 2009 enrollment, you can figure the amount of recyclables collected per student:

Northeast Lakeview College: 24,155 pounds/4,562 students=5.3 pounds per student
Palo Alto College: 53,599 pounds/8,047 students=6.7 pounds per student
Northwest Vista College: 65,805 pounds/14,584 students=4.5 pounds per student
St. Philip’s College: 83,925 pounds/10,731 students=7.8 pounds per student
San Antonio College: 149,920 pounds/21,589 students=6.9 per student

So, it looks like St. Philip’s College has the best recycling total per student…as much as it pains me to admit that! Still, we at Palo Alto College are proud of what we have accomplished, and I think that the District should be commended for keeping 377,404 pounds of recyclables out of San Antonio’s landfill. The volunteers who collect the recyclables each week deserve special recognition and a giant thank you.

Her fiction and poetry have been widely anthologized and published in literary magazines. She is the translator (into Spanish) of Junot Diaz's Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and (into English) of the the upcoming anthology, Mexico City Noir.

Obejas is currently the Sor Juana Visiting Writer at DePaul University in Chicago.

Dr. Antonia I. Castañeda, prize winning historian who was named 2007 Scholar of the Year by the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS), has taught U.S. History, Mexican American history, Women's History, Latina/o History, and Chicana/o studies in colleges and universities in Washington, California and Texas. She is co-editor of the Chicana Matters Book Series with U.T. Press, and is a founding member of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS). She has been appointed to the San Antonio Literacy Commission for District I, and to the Texas State Interagency Literacy Council.

Castañeda has an M.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in History from Stanford

Experts will advise viewers on the best path to take for higher learning.

As in years past, the College Call-In cuts between live studio segments, where viewers can call or email questions to be answered by higher ed experts, including representatives from the Alamo Colleges, and segments from PBS’s Road Trip Nation. Interviews with San Antonio College student Jennifer Flores and St. Philip’s College Director of Student Financial Services Diego B.
